================== MT-DIW5 =================== Venue For the first time in history, the EM Induction and the MT-DIW workshops will be held in South America, in the cities of Cabo Frio and Rio de Janeiro on the southwestern Atlantic coast. The MT-DIW5 will take place at the Observatorio Nacional, in Rio de Janeiro, between 17th and 19th of August 2000. Brazil's capital from 1763 to 1960, Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in the country (population around 6,000,000 inhabitants). It has a majestic beauty, with build-up areas nestled between a bay and beaches, on one side, and an abruptly rising mountain range, covered by a tropical forest, on the other. This unique landscape makes Rio one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The 15th EM Workshop will take place at the Municipal Theatre, in Cabo Frio, between 19th and 26th of August 2000. In a jagged peninsula with dozens of beautiful beaches (all sizes, fine white sand), sand dunes, constant sunshine, blue sea and mild temperatures all year round, Cabo Frio is located at about 150 km northeast of Rio de Janeiro on the Atlantic ocean coastline. The region has a population of around 120,000 inhabitants, scattered among three main cities: Cabo Frio (county seat), Armacao dos Buzios (famous night life) and Arraial do Cabo (fishing spot). Industries are related to fishing, salt and agriculture, but the tourism is responsible for the most commercial growth. Climate Rio de Janeiro and Cabo Frio offer a tropical climate all year round. Dress lightly and be sure to bring appropriate protection from the tropical sun: hats and sun glasses. A light cotton is the rule for outdoor activities during the day. A light sweater may be required for the evening. From July to September (winter season), the temperatures average 20 C (68 F). Cabo Frio can be rather windy during August. Banking The Brazilian currency is the Real (R$) and the present exchange rate is
US$ 1 = R$ 1.80. The official exchange rate is published daily in the
newspapers. US dollar cash and travellers checks are easily exchanged with the hotel
cashiers, banks and travel agencies in Rio de Janeiro. In Cabo Frio, however, currency
exchange is troublesome as you can exchange cash and traveller's checks only at one bank
or at one travel agency. Once you arrive in Rio de Janeiro, we suggest you to exchange
money at the Banco do Brasil Bank - International Airport branch in the 3rd floor. The
branch opens daily (including weekends) from 8am to 10pm. At Cabo Frio, the addresses
where exchange can be done are: Language The official language for the MTDIW5 and the 15th EM Induction Workshop will be English. Informal Meetings Rooms at Hotel Malibu can be made available for mini-workshops and informal meetings. Delegates wishing to organize such events should contact the Secretariat as soon as possible, indicating their needs and the expected number of participants. Organizing Committee |
