Financial Support

All requests for support, preferably by email, are to be directed to the Chairman of the Financial Support Request Committee:

Pascal Tarits
UBO - IUEM
UMR 'Domaines Oceaniques'
Place Nicolas Copernic
F-29280 Plouzane
France
Tel: +33 2 98 49 87 63
Fax: +33 2 98 49 87 60
email: tarits@univ-brest.fr

The request must reach Pascal Tarits on or before April 15th 2000. Requests received after that date cannot be entertained, as decisions must be made in time for supported participants to book the cheapest possible airfares.

***PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ALL YOUR COLLEAGUES AND STUDENTS KNOW OF THIS DATE***

The principle aim of the support funds is to enable as many students and young scientists as possible to attend our workshops. There will also be an attempt to aid a few established scientists in need. For the 1996 Onuma Induction Workshop, the following criteria were used to establish those cases most worthy of support:

  1. No support if supported for either of the last two workshops.
The philosophy here is obviously to spread the funds around.
  2. Only "one" person per institute supported for airfare, registration, accommodation, and food.
The philosophy here was to ensure that representation from as many institutes as possible occurred. We did not decide which "one", but asked those who came from the institute to decide, pointing out that they could share the support (one taking the airfare, another taking the accommodation, etc.). In all but one case this resulted in all those who applied from the same institute being able to find other means of support and to attend the workshop.
For the 1998 Sinaia Induction Workshop, the following criteria were used to establish those cases most worthy of support:
  1. All LATE applications automatically rejected.
Clearly, those who submitted on time should not be penalized.
  2. No support if supported for Onuma.
The philosophy here is obviously to spread the funds around.
  3. Mature scientists preferentially from eastern Europe.
The decision to choose Sinaia was based on the access of former Soviet Union (FSU) colleagues to the workshop, so preference was given to scientists from eastern Europe.
  4. Priority to students, then young scientists, finally mature scientists.
The funds were preferentially directed to students first, with the result that all students (except late and withdrawn) were supported. Then "young" scientists (Ph.D. within 10 years) - over 2/3 were supported. Finally mature scientists.
The breakdown of those supported was:
    • students: 50% of available funds
    • young scientists: 33%
    • mature scientists: 17%
