Dear EM colleagues,
It is with great sadness that I report the death of Professor Luiz Rijo of Universidade Federal do Para (UFPA)in Brazil. Luiz died in hospital in Belem on June 15th 2009. Luiz Rijo, born on 31 January 1942, carried out his doctoral study at the university of Utah in Salt Lake City,1972-1977, under the supervision of Stanley Ward. His work on multidimensional modeling and inversion of electrical and electromagnetic data is known worldwide and his freely available software developments are widely used in MT (including plane-wave 2D or PW2D; PW1D) and IP interpretation schemes. Luiz Rijo supervised several postgraduate research studies at UFPA and was active in all EM meetings in Brazil. In the past 5 years, he focused on marine CSEM and some of the doctoral theses that he supervised can be found at www.rijo.pro.br.
