The Hog Award

The Hog Award is an award given to the scientist or student who has his or her name on the greatest number of papers at an EM Induction Workshop, thereby "hogging" the time. This prestigious award (!) was first presented at the 2002 workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. It was chosen by Alan Chave as an appropriate award on the basis that (1) it had to be ugly (so that spouses would not have it in the house), (2) it had to be heavy, and (3) it had to be fragile - the last two so that it would be a real nuisance to transport to the next workshop.

The conditions of the award are:

  1. The awardee must be present at the workshop in order to receive it. Authors in abstentia are excluded from receiving it
  2. The awardee should sign the Hog upon receiving it
  3. The awardee must take good care of the Hog
  4. The awardee is required to attend the following workshop in order to present it formally to the succeeding awardee at the next workshop

The Hog award has been awarded to the following for their dedication to ensuring that they most certainly are not ignored at a workshop:

Historical note

The award has a small chip on its left ear. This is due to the award falling off the top of shelves in the house of the first awardee, and landing on the head of that awardee's wife, Elke Menzel-Jones. The award was only slightly damaged, whereas the wife ended up with a gash in the top of her head and blood on the carpet. The awardee was told in no uncertain terms by his wife that the award is never again to come into her house, and if she sees it ever again in her life it will end up in many small pieces. Thus, upon receiving the award again in 2006 the third awardee (who was the same person as the first awardee) broke with the conditions and gave it back to the second awardee to hold for two years and to take to the 2008 China workshop.

Addendum to Historical note: The award is currently hidden in Dublin lest the 2010 awardee's wife finds it...

Addendum 2: The award was hidden so well, that the 2010 awardee could not find it in time to take to Darwin. Which is just as well, as the 2012 awardee is the same person as the 2010 awardee.
